GREATER SAVANNAH NEIGHBORHOODS...
SAVANNAH was founded by an English General James Edward Oglethorpe in 1733. The city's infrastructure is made up today of 21 “squares” of which houses, church's and buildings line the streets around them. Most have Spanish moss laden trees, flowering bushes, park benches, fountains and “green” space for children to play and adults to while the day away! Walk it & enjoy it!
The homes in our downtown HISTORIC DISTRICT are a mixture of colonial cottages, Federal, English Regency, Georgian and Queen Anne style. Because of the areas strict governance, the homes have been elegantly restored. New homes and townhouses must be built in the tradition of other homes of the era gone by. (Usually, with an elevator!) A lovely area to live in!
You can walk throughout the downtown area anytime of the day or evening. Many wonderful restaurants and live entertainment and movies in the referbished theaters throughout downtown Savannah. Walk the cobblestone streets along the Savannah River and watch the ocean freighters bring commerce into the third largest Eastern Seaboard Port. An awesome sight to see!
VICTORIAN DISTRICT adjacent to the Historic District has 2 and 3 story framed homes. Many have been restored to their original look and style, but many need extensive repairs.
ARDSLEY PARK was laid out in 1911 as Savannah 's first “suburb!” (Just 2 miles south of city center) It has a mixture of prestigious four and five bedroom mansions and quaint bungalows on tree lined streets. The area has become a favorite of young professionals and families.
GORDONSTON is a secluded neighborhood on the Eastside, similar to Ardsley Park in character, but considerably smaller.
DUTCH ISLAND is a secluded area and some of it in a gated community with long views of rivers and marshes. Spacious homes and manicured lawns!
ISLE OF HOPE is one of Savannah 's most picturesque neighborhoods. Beautiful old cottages with white picket fences… narrow streets with moss-strewn oaks makes for an ol'e fashion “Sunday” drive. Mansion's over look the Herb and Skidaway rivers.
SKIDAWAY ISLAND is the home to the “Landings.” The Landings is a large “gated” community with 6 golf courses, 36 tennis courts, 2 deep water marinas and four “country club” clubhouses. The homes are Low Country, Federal, Colonial and traditional ranch set on beautiful treed and landscaped grounds. It was build as a paradise for retirees, but is becoming a young professionals and families paradise too!
The EASTSIDE ISLANDS are less historic and more easy-going. They are surrounded my rivers, marshes and the Atlantic Ocean . The town of TYBEE ISLAND, 18 miles south of Savannah , has ocean front beaches, resort living and a population of 3,400 residents year around. Homes, cottages and mansions overlook the ocean, tidal creeks and marshes.
INSHORE ISLANDS of varying sizes of Oatland , Talahi , Whitemarsh , Wilmington and Thunderbolt, typifies the laid-back, family-oriented atmosphere of the area. These areas have deep-water docks, tidal creeks and marshes. Thunderbolt and Wilmington have large marinas.
SOUTHSIDE SAVANNAH is made up of homes, apartment complexes and condos. Two department store shopping malls and other large home building and convenient stores. Armstrong University has a large campus here. Two significant neighborhoods is Windsor Forrest with 1960 build homes and Georgetown build in 1990.
RINCON, a small town with growth pains, has several new subdivisons. It is located off I-95 and north on Highway 21. (Above Port Wentworth) 20 miles northeast of Savannah. Rincon is in Effingham County that has the best school system in the Greater Savannah Area.
POOLER is a “fast growing” town near the airport and intersected by Interstates 95 and 16. Many beautiful brand new home developments are part of the landscape. Pooler is close to Gulf Stream Aerospace Corporation. Along with the town of Pooler, the towns of Guyton and Bloomingdale also have new home developments, still very rural.
RICHMOND HILL to the south has upscale older and newer homes with DEEP WATER everwhere! A nice place to live! 30 minutes to downtown Savannah and 15 miles to Fort Stewart. GOOD schools!
NEW HOME, TOWNHOUSE and CONDO SUBDIVISIONS mostly West of I-95. Port Wentworth, Rincon, Pooler, Bloomingdale, Guyton, and Richmond Hill. Highway 17 South toward Richmond Hill are also new subdivisions and in Georgetown along Highway 204. GOOD schools.
SOUTHERN COASTAL COMMUNITIES from Richmond Hill south along the rivers and intercoastal waterway that lead out to the Atlantic Ocean have many NEW HOME retirement and 2nd home communities!
