GREATER SAVANNAH NEIGHBORHOODS
SAVANNAH was founded by an English General, James Edward Oglethorpe in 1733. The city’s infrastructure is made up today of 21 “squares” of which houses, churches and buildings line the streets around them. Most have massive Spanish moss laden oak trees, flowering bushes, park benches, fountains and civil war statues and monuments. Green spaces for children to play and adults to while the day away! Walk it and enjoy it!
The homes in our downtown HISTORIC DISTRICT are a mixture of colonial cottages, Federal, English Regency, Georgian and Queen Anne style. Because of the areas strict governance, the homes have been elegantly restored. New homes and townhomes must be built in the tradition of other homes of the era gone by. A lovely area to live in!
You can walk many cobble stone streets through the downtown anytime of the day or evening. Many wonderful restaurants are in historically older buildings. Theaters with on stage talent dot the area…all refurbished to original look and feel. Walk along the wharf,
visit the many shops, and watch 7+ story ocean freighters bringing commerce into the 3rd largest Eastern Sea Port. An AWESOME sight to see! Bring your camera!
VICTORIAN DISTRICT adjacent to the Historic District has 2 and 3 story framed homes. May have been restored to there original look and style, but many more need the same. IS this an opportunity for you to purchase and restore these homes?
ARDSLEY PARK was laid out in 1911 as Savannah’s first “suburb” 2 miles south of the city! It has a mixture of prestigious four and five bedroom mansions and quaint bungalows on tree lined streets. The area has become a favorite of young professionals and families. Several playgrounds …a great family neighborhood!
GORDONSTON is a secluded neighborhood on the Eastside similar to Ardsley park in character, but considerably smaller. A GREAT children’s park too!
DUTCH ISLAND is a secluded area and an up scale area is gated community with long views of the marsh and rivers. Spacious homes and manicured lawns.
ISLE OF HOPE is Savannah’s most picturesque neighborhoods. Beautiful old cottages with white picket fences, narrow streets with moss-strewn oaks, makes for an ol’e fashion “Sunday” drive. Mansion’s over looking the Herb River (intercostals-waterway!”)
A large marina is also here.
SKIDAWAY ISLAND is the home to the LANDINGS! This is a large gated community with 5 golf courses, 36 tennis courts, 2 deep water marines, and four full service country clubs. The homes are Low Country, Federal, Colonial and traditional ranch set on beautiful treed and landscaped grounds. It is home to 8,000, living in 4,000 homes! It was built as a paradise for retirees, but is becoming a young professionals and families paradise too! Come join us!
TYBEE ISLAND is less historic and more-easy going. Surrounded by rivers, marshes and the Atlantic Ocean. The town of TYBEE ISLAND, 25 minutes from downtown Savannah has ocean beaches, ocean front property, many mansions over looking the ocean, marshes and tidal creek resort living. Come play with us!
INSHORE ISLANDS of varying sizes, like Oatland, Talahi, Whitemarsh, Wilmington and Thunderbolt…. Typifies the laid-back, family-oriented atmosphere of the area. The area has deep water docks, tidal creeks and marshes. Thunderbolt and Wilmington have large marines. Fishing, crabing and shrimping from your dock is wonderful!
SOUTHSIDE SAVANNAH is made up of homes, apartment complexes and condos. Two department store malls and large box stores. Armstrong University has a large campus here. Two significant neighborhoods is WINDSOR FORREST built in the 60’s and GEORGETOWN built in the 90’s. Hunter Army Air Field is within the city limits of Savannah and is home to the Apache Helicopters.
RICHMOND HILL (40 minutes southwest of downtown Savannah.) Area was started by Henry Ford as a summer home back in the hay-day! Today his plantation is a very exclusive community of homes over looking the Ogeechee River! It is beautiful! Richmond Hill really is the place to live if you are looking for small town feel, lots of deep water, acreage, nice home communities out in the country. Bryan County has very GOOD schools. (25 miles from Fort Steward Marine Base, 3rd ID)
POOLER is a fast growing town close to the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport and intersected by interstates 95 and 16. (West of Savannah) New home developments are part of the landscape. Gulf Stream Aerospace Corporation and several other large companies are here. Home Depot, Lowes, Dollar General, + + + southeastern mega distribution warehouses that are feed by the constant flow of goods from China and elsewhere by the Savannah Cargo Container PORT in Port Wentworth. There IS Employment in the Pooler area.
GUYTON, BLOOMINGDALE is to the west of Savannah off I-16 above Pooler. This IS country! But it is slowly but surely becoming the next “boom” in building of homes. This is Effingham County and it has the BEST school system in the South! Lots of orchards, horse farms, lakes and ponds, drag strip, car racing track. If this is YOU, than this IS where you belong!
RINCON is a small town with growing pains. Off I-95 and north ON Highway 21 (above Port Wentworth) 20 miles Northeast of Savannah. Lots of New Home construction along Hwy 21 going into Rincon. It is in Effingham County and has GOOD schools. Of course all the towns around Savannah had a role in the CIVIL WAR coming to an end and so if you are a history buff, this is the place to be. Many “enactments” are played out in the area!
